General information about Rawalpindi and Islamabad

                                      History

The twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad located against the back drop of Margallah Hills at north edge of Potohar Plareau.on the basis of archaeological discoveries, archaeologists believes that a distinct culture flourished on the plateau as far back 300,000 years .based upon the stone implements found in Soan valley ,researchers have revealed various aspects of activities of the primitive human being. these discoveries are comparable to "Cromerian" tools of Paleolithic period discovered in Europe. the material remains found on the site of the city of Rawalpindi prove the existences of the Buddhist established contemporary to Taxela but less celebrated than its neighbor does. it appears that the ancient city went into oblivions as a result of Hun devastation. the first Muslim invader ,Muhmood of Ghazni (979-1030 AD). gifted the ruined city to a Gakkar Chief ,Kai Gohar. the town ,however being on invaders' route ,could not prosper and remained deserted until Jhanda khan, another Ggakkar Chief ,restored it and gave the name Rawalpindi after the village Rawal in 1493 AD. Rawalpindi remined under the rule of Gakkhars till Muqarrab Khan , the last Gakkar rule , was defeated by the Sikhs in 1765 AD. Sikhs invited trades from other places to settle here. this brought the city into prominence. Sikhs lost the city to British in 1849 AD. it then became the General headqurters of British Army and they established a cantonment south of the city.1879. the Punjab Northern Rawalway was extended to Rawalpindi but the train services was formally inaugurated on January  01,1886.

over the years Rawalpindi has retained its traditional  flavor  .however .some modern residential areas and buildings have come up all over the town since the creation of the Pakistan. Pakistan 's new capital ,Islamabad being the twin city of Rawalpindi ,equally shares the same archaeological and historical back ground. the master plan of the most modern city was prepared in 1960 by M/S coinstantaneous Doxiadas.a Greek firm of Architects. the construction was started in October 1961.the city came into life when its first office building of Islamabad occupied in 1966.it is a modern  and care fully planned city with wide tree-lined streets.large houses, public buildings and well organized bazars.and having attractions of the tourists with its lush green  and spacious and peaceful places.Archaeolgical ,histological site, mosques, museums, parks and gardens all these have in these cities.
